IN SEARCH OF THE STONE TABLET!

It’s time for another round of webslinging wonderment by two of the men who put the “master” in Masterworks, Stan “The Man” Lee and “Jazzy” John Romita. They’ll be coming at you in this arachnid’s eighth volume with a storyline as epic as they come: The Saga of the Stone Tablet!

All the swingin’ calamity and social consciousness kicks off with the Kingpin’s quest to decipher an ancient clay tablet whose secrets promise great power. Poor ol’ Spidey gets into the mix and after saving the day finds himself branded Public Enemy No. 1 (‘natch). With the Kingpin on one side and J. Jonah Jameson turning up the heat in the Daily Bugle, things go from bad to horrible with the introduction of Man-Mountain Marko and Maggia bossman, Silvermane. It’s a Peter Parker pressure cooker that only gets turned up from there!

Also featuring battles with Quicksilver, the Shocker, and the Lizard along with an extra-special bonus, the 1968 Stan Lee/Ross Andru Spidey yarn from Marvel Super-Heroes #14.

EXCERPTS FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY JOHN ROMITA SR.

Show Excerpt (289 More Words)

“Everything Stan Lee aimed for in The Amazing Spider-Man finds its way into the stories you will enjoy in this Masterworks.

The setting for the opening issue is Empire State University in the midst of student riots, which were a common occurence in the late ’60s. Randy Robertson, son of the Daily Bugle’s Robbie Robertson, and his fellow students are at an impasse with officials at the school.

Social relevance that reflects the times – right up Stan’s alley. There’s even a bit with a fiery Gwen Stacy defending Peter Parker’s image!

The Kingpin of Crime sets out to obtain a priceless stone tablet (which we based on the Rosetta Stone from antiquity) on display at the University. Using the riots as a cover, th Kingpin succeeds and makes off with the tablet. And that’s just the beginning of the saga that leads us on a wild ride as the tablet moves through many hands.

Along the way, we encounter Quicksilver, the Shocker, a close call for Gwen’s father, Captain Stacy, an even closer call for J. Jonah Jameson, Man Mountain Marko, Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. the Lizard, and Silvermane, whose final fate is a wonder to behold. And, of course, Spidey goes through more than his share of trouble as he follows the trail of the stone tablet.

You would think, after hearing that outline, that Stan and I planned all of this in advance with each and every twist carefully plotted and orchestrated. I can assure you that was not the case at all! In our story sessions we set out to plot on issue at a time, but we’d be happy just to make it through one hour without interruption. Our aim was to get a complete story in one month…”

THE DEATH OF GWEN STACY AND THE COMING OF THE PUNISHER!

Norman Osborn’s memory has returned. The Green Goblin is back. Gwen Stacy is missing. And it will all lead to a confrontation atop the George Washington Bridge whose aftermath will leave Peter Parker, the Amazing Spider-Man, forever changed. That’s right, it’s the – spoiler warning! – death of Gwen Stacy, the story that put a generation into therapy and cemented the Green Goblin’s name as the definition of evil.

The Marvel Masterworks present this tragic tale and a host of Spider-Man classics that would come to define the Webspinner’s world for years to come: the debut of Col. John Jameson’s werewolf curse, the Man-Wolf. The beginning of Harry Osborn’s descent into madness and suspicion and a certain green costume. The first appearance of Frank Castle – the Punisher – the maybe-villain, maybe-anti-hero who would rise to become one of Marvel’s most famous characters.

Topping it off, there’s the first appearance of the nefarious Jackal, the return of the Vulture, Hammerhead, the hilarious Human Torch-built Spider-Mobile, and the shocking wedding of Aunt May and Doctor Octopus! Add to that the debut of fan-favorite Spidey artist Ross Andru and what you have is a Marvel Masterworks!

SPIDEY VS. THE GOBLIN’S RETURN!

There’s no doubting that Peter Parker has never had it easy. When he’s facing a gauntlet of ne’er-do-wells the likes of the Molten Man, Morbius and Man-Wolf (just for starters), then you know that the Parker luck is in full effect – and you’re in store for some top-notch Spider-Man adventures!

Exhibit A: Teetering on the edge of sanity since the death of his father Norman (a.k.a. the Green Goblin), Harry Osborn goes off the deep end and takes up the mantle of Spidey’s nemesis. With his best friend out to kill him, it’s an edge-of-your-seat encounter that will redefine the Webslinger’s world for decades to come.

And just to keep things interesting, the Tarantula makes his debut; the Punisher returns; Mindworm, Grizzly, Mysterio and the Jackal pile on, and guess what? You’ve got yourself another helping of Spidey Masterworks!

Conan wasn’t the only sword and sorcery icon borne from the mind of Robert E. Howard to be adapted to Marvel Comics. With the breakout success of Conan, Roy Thomas set his sights on Howard’s legendary barbarian king of Valusia, Kull, for his own four-color comic book series. Sibling art tandem Marie and John Severin joined for what many consider the creative highlight of their careers, in a run of tales that showed how uneasy hung the crown on the head of Kull, especially when confronting the wicked sorcerer Thulsa Doom! The art of Mike Ploog features heavily in Kull, along with further contributions from some of the era’s top talents, not to mention Kull’s first appearance drawn by comics legend Bernie Wrightson!

GHOST RIDER MAKES HIS BLAZING MASTERWORKS DEBUT IN 2019!

Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider, makes his Marvel Masterworks debut!

In 1972, one of the most iconic characters in comic book history, the flame-skulled Ghost Rider, burned his demonic presence into readers’ minds. Forevermore, a legion of fans were addicted to the Rider’s combination of hell-on-wheels drama and action-horror adventure. And it all begins here when Johnny Blaze makes a deal with the devil to save his friend’s life. The payment? Transformation into the Ghost Rider. The stories that follow will take the horror hero to Hell to battle Satan, pit him against the tempting Witch-Woman and team him with Daimon Hellstrom, Son of Satan. Written by Gary Friedrich and gloriously illustrated by Mike Ploog, Tom Sutton and Jim Mooney, this iconic series is beautifully restored for this Marvel Masterworks edition.

And he’s going to add to the ranks of all three, beginning with an Iron Fist kung fu clash. Then, Nighthawk, Valkyrie and Doctor Strange join in the battle against Jeremiah and his Church of Blood. Never wanting to leave a corner of Marveldom unexplored, the monsters are unleashed with Man-Wolf, Frankenstein’s Monster and the Beast. We’re even including Spidey’s Giant-Size adventures with (or is it against?) the Punisher and the Man-Thing.
