STEVE GERBER’S OMEGA THE UNKNOWN IS THE 350TH MARVEL MASTERWORKS!

In the 1970s, Steve Gerber revolutionized comics. His innovative work on Man-Thing, The Defenders and Howard the Duck opened creative avenues that excited readers and inspired a generation of creators. So, when Marvel announced an all-new character co-created by Gerber, anticipation was fever pitch. Omega the Unknown debuted in late 1975. It featured an enigmatic approach to one of the most compelling stories: the stranger in a strange land. Jean-Michael Starling, a boy with a mysterious past, holds a curious connection to the super-powered being Omega. Their quest to understand the gritty world of New York City’s reveals as much about us as it does them. As their secrets are revealed and the action unfolds in the Marvel manner, you’ll come to understand why Omega holds a place as one of the most influential series of its time.

IN SEARCH OF THE STONE TABLET!

It’s time for another round of webslinging wonderment by two of the men who put the “master” in Masterworks, Stan “The Man” Lee and “Jazzy” John Romita. They’ll be coming at you in this arachnid’s eighth volume with a storyline as epic as they come: The Saga of the Stone Tablet!

All the swingin’ calamity and social consciousness kicks off with the Kingpin’s quest to decipher an ancient clay tablet whose secrets promise great power. Poor ol’ Spidey gets into the mix and after saving the day finds himself branded Public Enemy No. 1 (‘natch). With the Kingpin on one side and J. Jonah Jameson turning up the heat in the Daily Bugle, things go from bad to horrible with the introduction of Man-Mountain Marko and Maggia bossman, Silvermane. It’s a Peter Parker pressure cooker that only gets turned up from there!

Also featuring battles with Quicksilver, the Shocker, and the Lizard along with an extra-special bonus, the 1968 Stan Lee/Ross Andru Spidey yarn from Marvel Super-Heroes #14.

EXCERPTS FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY JOHN ROMITA SR.

Show Excerpt (289 More Words)

“Everything Stan Lee aimed for in The Amazing Spider-Man finds its way into the stories you will enjoy in this Masterworks.

The setting for the opening issue is Empire State University in the midst of student riots, which were a common occurence in the late ’60s. Randy Robertson, son of the Daily Bugle’s Robbie Robertson, and his fellow students are at an impasse with officials at the school.

Social relevance that reflects the times – right up Stan’s alley. There’s even a bit with a fiery Gwen Stacy defending Peter Parker’s image!

The Kingpin of Crime sets out to obtain a priceless stone tablet (which we based on the Rosetta Stone from antiquity) on display at the University. Using the riots as a cover, th Kingpin succeeds and makes off with the tablet. And that’s just the beginning of the saga that leads us on a wild ride as the tablet moves through many hands.

Along the way, we encounter Quicksilver, the Shocker, a close call for Gwen’s father, Captain Stacy, an even closer call for J. Jonah Jameson, Man Mountain Marko, Dr. Curt Connors, a.k.a. the Lizard, and Silvermane, whose final fate is a wonder to behold. And, of course, Spidey goes through more than his share of trouble as he follows the trail of the stone tablet.

You would think, after hearing that outline, that Stan and I planned all of this in advance with each and every twist carefully plotted and orchestrated. I can assure you that was not the case at all! In our story sessions we set out to plot on issue at a time, but we’d be happy just to make it through one hour without interruption. Our aim was to get a complete story in one month…”

INTRODUCING THE PROWLER, THE SCHEMER AND A BOLD, NEW BLACK WIDOW!

Well tickle my webs and call it time for another offering of the greatest, friendliest, webslingingest super hero of all – the Amazing Spider-Man! The adventures Stan “The Man” and the Jazzy One, John Romita, have in store for you in this ten-spot of tales are enough to make even ol’ J. Jonah Jameson fall in love with Spidey. (Well, maybe not!) But that means you’ve no competition for a date with the likes of the Prowler in his first appearance; the beautiful Black Widow seen for the first time in her sultry new spy gear; an underworld family in-fight between the Kingpin and the Schemer – including Vanessa Fisk’s entrée into Marveldom; and the Chameleon, Electro and the Kangaroo – an assemblage that’s always the bridesmaid but never the bride.

It’s not just the most colorful array of villains in comics, of course! There’s melodrama aplenty in the fashion that could only befit poor Peter Parker. See how Mr. Luckless himself handles not only the loss of his powers and glowing Gwen’s fear of Spidey, but how he wiggles his way out of revealing his identity right before Gwen, MJ, and the gang’s very eyes! We’ll be waiting, so don’t forget that corsage, most Fearless Front Facer!

ROGER STERN + SPIDER-MAN = SPECTACULAR!

Before he would set Amazing Spider-Man on the path to comics glory, master storyteller Roger Stern did a Spectacular job on its sister title! Producing a run of the wall-crawler’s most memorable tales, Stern introduced a host of new and compelling characters, including the gangster Belladonna and a new love interest for Aunt May, Nathan Lubensky, and reinvigorated the Prowler and White Tiger. All that and room for iconic enemies to spare! The Vulture is back and he’s brought his evil nephew, Malachi, with him! And another veteran of the Sinister Six, Mysterio, is up to no good, in league with a gang of Spider-Man’s oldest villains! This Masterworks volume also includes a double-sized Annual showdown with the man called Rapier!

BROTHER VOODOO JOINS THE MASTERWORKS CLUB IN MAY 2021!

In 1973, Marvel’s iconic series Strange Tales was reborn starring an extraordinary new horror hero. Today, the Marvel Masterworks are bringing the zombie hunting adventures of that hero—Brother Voodoo—back to life! Haitian-born, Jericho Drumm left his island nation to study psychology in America. When his brother is on his death bed, he returns home and this man of science becomes entangled in the spiritual world of voodoo! Jericho’s brother’s spirit is joined with his own, making him the new Brother Voodoo and a powerful protector of mankind. His exploits pit him against zombies and A.I.M. and team him with Moon Knight and Doctor Strange. The classic tales of Brother Brother are beautifully restored and collected in complete in this single volume.

Only together can these sometimes allies, sometimes adversaries survive the unstoppable Iguana. Then, in a two-part Annual extravaganza, comes Doc Ock! All the while, Peter’s increasingly on edge. The bizarre horror of the Swarm and a battle with Morbius, the Living Vampire, do little to help. Then, the emergence of the Schizoid Man pushes him over the line. And on the other side is the Spider-Lizard! Can our mutated hero survive? He’d better, or he won’t be able to team up with the FF against the Frightful Four!

GHOST RIDER MAKES HIS BLAZING MASTERWORKS DEBUT IN 2019!

Johnny Blaze, the Ghost Rider, makes his Marvel Masterworks debut!

In 1972, one of the most iconic characters in comic book history, the flame-skulled Ghost Rider, burned his demonic presence into readers’ minds. Forevermore, a legion of fans were addicted to the Rider’s combination of hell-on-wheels drama and action-horror adventure. And it all begins here when Johnny Blaze makes a deal with the devil to save his friend’s life. The payment? Transformation into the Ghost Rider. The stories that follow will take the horror hero to Hell to battle Satan, pit him against the tempting Witch-Woman and team him with Daimon Hellstrom, Son of Satan. Written by Gary Friedrich and gloriously illustrated by Mike Ploog, Tom Sutton and Jim Mooney, this iconic series is beautifully restored for this Marvel Masterworks edition.

SPIDEY WEBS UP A SECOND SPECTACULAR SUMMER IN 2019!

Peter Parker’s second SPECTACULAR serving is even greater than the first! The Beetle kicks it off, then Peter heads west to cover the demise of the Champions, leading to a battle between Spider-Man, Angel and Iceman. The White Tiger enters for an extended guest role as the Lightmaster, the Enforcers and the Scorpion turn up the tension. Then, Moon Knight helps Spidey fight the Maggia, who retaliate in the form of the Masked Marauder. It’s a multipart epic pairing Spider-Man and Daredevil and featuring Frank Miller’s first DD artwork! It culminates in the seven-part saga of Carrion, the mysterious rotting horror with hidden ties to Peter Parker’s past and a violent desire to punish him for the death of Gwen Stacy.
