IN THE MIDDLE OF THE OWL/OCTOPUS WAR!

The Spectacular Spider-Man hits high gear! Bill Mantlo crafted a compelling, interwoven series of adventures in his second tenure on Spectacular. Pairing Spidey with the Black Cat as partner and love interest, Mantlo fused the crime drama of the Kingpin with larger-than-life villains like Doctor Octopus. The formula made Spectacular a page-turner powerhouse. It begins with the Kingpin hiring Boomerang, the killer that keeps coming back. Meanwhile, Cloak and Dagger wage war on drugs as the gangster Silvermane clings onto life in a new cyborg body. Then, when Doctor Octopus and the Owl vie to take over New York’s criminal underworld, total war breaks out in the city! Come see why “The Owl/Octopus War” is a saga that ranks among Spider-Man’s greatest.

MAY THE FARCE BE WITH YOU – AND HOWARD THE DUCK! (AND HUMAN!)

You wanted more Howard the Duck? Well, you’re getting more Howard the Duck! Marvel Masterworks finishes off Steve Gerber’s satirical masterpiece collecting 16-issues and an Annual’s worth of quackstastic adventures starring Howard and his gal pal, Beverly! Howard finds himself lost on the island of his greatest enemy, Dr. Bong, and Beverly faces an ultimatum: become Mrs. Beverly Bong or the duck gets fricasseed! Things get worse for our feathered friend when he undergoes a monstrous transformation. The world isn’t ready for Howard the Human! So it’s time to go off-planet in a space-opera adventure that could only be called “Star Waaugh!” Joining Gerber for his run is artist Gene Colan, rendering the hilarity on every page. May the Farce Be with You!

Roger Stern and John Romita Jr. earned their stripes as two of Marvel’s most legendary creators with their run on Amazing Spider-Man! They kick this volume off with the introduction of the Hobgoblin! Who is he, and how did he become one of the most threatening villains in Spidey’s life? Then, you can’t keep a bad Vulture down, as the master criminal returns in a classic two-parter. It serves as a prelude to confrontations with the Mad Thinker, Thunderball and Spidey’s most famous rogue, J. Jonah Jameson. Peter Parker’s romantic life gets messy when Mary Jane and the Black Cat enter the picture. And topping it off, one of the most beloved Spidey stories of all time, “The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man!”

Conan wasn’t the only sword and sorcery icon borne from the mind of Robert E. Howard to be adapted to Marvel Comics. With the breakout success of Conan, Roy Thomas set his sights on Howard’s legendary barbarian king of Valusia, Kull, for his own four-color comic book series. Sibling art tandem Marie and John Severin joined for what many consider the creative highlight of their careers, in a run of tales that showed how uneasy hung the crown on the head of Kull, especially when confronting the wicked sorcerer Thulsa Doom! The art of Mike Ploog features heavily in Kull, along with further contributions from some of the era’s top talents, not to mention Kull’s first appearance drawn by comics legend Bernie Wrightson!

Doctor Strange and the Defenders face a crisis when the Eye of Agamotto is stolen by the bizarre Xenogenesis cult. If the demon worshippers succeed, the Elder Gods will be unleashed on Earth. Hellcat emerges from the battle with new powers, but they can’t save her from Membership Madness! Comics’ famous non-team begins a membership drive that brings a horde of heroes to their doorstep, and heroes always play nice with each other, right? Next, it’s off to Asgard where Valkyrie is split from her human side, leading to a struggle for the hero’s soul. We conclude with an other-dimensional epic revealing the bizarre world of Lunatik and a fight with Foolkiller that puts the future of the Defenders at risk.
