Marvel August 1961 Omnibus Collects 19 Vintage Comics On Uncoated Paper Stock

Save the date for August 25, 2021, to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the most momentous comic book event in Marvel history, the debut of Fantastic Four #1! Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s masterwork put the world on notice that the Marvel Age of Comics had arrived, with a quartet of cosmic-powered individuals with down-to-earth problems. It was a game-changer for Marvel and for comics as a genre, but it’s not the only thing that Marvel published in the fateful month of August 1961. If you’ve ever been curious what the lay of the land was like for Stan Lee and Company back in those long-lost days of comic book creationism, Marvel: August 1961 Omnibus HC will take you directly back to the moment when FF #1 dropped like an atomic bomb.

The revolution launched by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby didn’t occur in a vacuum. Marvel released 16 other titles that month, making August 1961 a perfect snapshot of the dawning of the Marvel Age: Giant monsters stalked the earth in Strange Tales, Journey Into Mystery, Tales to Astonish, Tales of Suspense, and Amazing Adventures; the legendary Steve Ditko carved out his own niche of the fantastic in Amazing Adult Fantasy; heroic cowboys brought justice to the wild West in Two-Gun Kid, Kid Colt, Outlaw, and Gunsmoke Western; love broke hearts in Love RomancesTeen-Age Romances and Linda Carter, Student Nurse; and teenage hijinks made lighthearted fare like Millie the Model, Life With Millie and Patsy Walker a laugh riot. And, of course, the majestic first issue of Fantastic Four, showing the way for the Marvel Age super-hero. All these issues are included complete and beautifully restored er. Plus, two bonus issues from September of 1961 are included: Rawhide Kid #25 and Patsy and Hedy #79. Their addition gives a complete picture of all the titles that Marvel was publishing at the moment Fantastic Four #1 hit store shelves.

Sixty years later, Marvel examines this seminal month in comics history with this oversized Omnibus edition that gathers every page of the magic and mystery of the dawning month of the Marvel Age of Comics! One additional note for book collectors: Editor Cory Sedlmeier posted at the Collected Editions forum, commenting on the book and noting a unique facet in its manufacture: “MARVEL: AUGUST 1961 is shaping up to be a really special project. We’re going using a different paper stock on MARVEL: AUGUST 1961. Rather than using our standard coated matte paper stock (right), it will feature an uncoated off-white paper (left). As a one-off volume, I wanted to try something a little different and I think it will look quite suitably fantastic!”
